My daughter traditionally spends Hallowin with one of her girlfriends. For each Hallowin I sewed a mascot for them. I sewed bats, furies, spiders and ghosts for them. Usually, my daughter and I wonder what to sew a month earlier. This year we had no idea what to sew. Ola thought about the pumpkin at first, but she gave up on this idea herself. Later we came up with the idea of rats. However, I felt that this idea was a choice out of force and not from the heart. We had to make up our minds and nothing else came to mind. Several days have passed. While watching Instagram, I saw cute little bats. They were 8 cm tall and looked incredibly cute. You could put them in your hands.
I was waiting impatiently for my daughter to come back from school to show her this tiny bat. I knew she would be delighted with him. So it happened. When she saw the picture of the bat, her eyes lit up. “Now we know what you will sew for us on Hallowin. It will be a little sister of bats that you sewed for our first Hallowin ”. The girls care very much about the mascots that I sew on them, the mascots from Hallowin from a few years ago are still doing well.
Because I work professionally, I don’t have enough free time to create a pattern of a tiny bat for hours. Luckily, the bat pattern from the photo was available for purchase on Etsy. It was designed by a Ukrainian designer who lives in the USA. If you want to buy a pattern, you can find it on Etsy in the TSminibears store. Together with the pattern, we also get a link to a one-hour video tutorial. The tutorial shows in detail how to make a bat. Sewing a bat does not require a sewing machine. Everything is hand sewn.
It took me 3 days to sew the first bat. Of course, I didn’t sew it for three whole days. I sewed it in the evenings after work. I did not measure exactly how long it took me to sew, I decided to do it while sewing the next bat. The bat is tiny, all on a micro scale. It is fully hand-sewn, therefore it takes a long time to sew it. This is my first mascot in my life made 100% without the use of a sewing machine. The elements are so tiny that machine sewing would be rather impossible. After stitching, you need to turn the individual elements to the right side. Since they are tiny, you should have tools and a lot of patience. For me, the hardest part was twisting the feet. One broke as I turned it and I had to sew another.
First, I sewed the body with the headstock. Later I sewed in ears, wings and feet, and at the end I put eyelets. The bat grew sweeter with each new element. My daughter liked it very much. I hope her friend will like it as well and that the girls will have a wonderful Hallowin.
