This is my first doll made to order from a client. A few weeks ago I was written by a lady who visits children dressed as a pirate. She wanted me to sew a pirate for her. Specifically Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean. Of course, I watched this movie and knew the character of Sparrow, but I had never thought about sewing a pirate before. The technique I sew is more suitable for the faces of pretty girls than dangerous pirates. I took a good look at the character and thought he was such a cute pirate. He is a very colorful character, with dreadlocks and lots of ornaments, but his face is delicate. Just young Johnny Depp. I thought that such a colorful character would be a great inspiration to sew a doll and I accepted an order to sew a pirate.
I like learning something new with dolls. There were a lot of new things with this doll: dreadlocks, a beard, a mustache, beads for hair, a leather pirate hat. I was most afraid of making dreadlocks. It’s about the stage at which it’s done. It is ready, painted head with sewn hair. If the dreadlocks didn’t come out, you’d have to do everything all over again. Fortunately, making dreadlocks was like many other things that seem difficult until you try to do them. Once you start it goes easy. The hat was a bit more difficult. I searched the whole house for a suitable round thing on which to form leather hat. Fortunately, one of the round candles was exactly the same diameter as the circumference of the doll’s head. It all worked out.
The most laborious part was sewing the shirt. The puffed sleeves, collar and cuffs meant that almost the entire shirt was sewn by hand. I usually sew clothes for dolls on the machine, which takes much less time. I couldn’t find a white fabric with red stripes for the sash Sparrow wears. I made it myself by painting stripes on a piece of white cotton.
The doll became more pirate-like with each new detail. Or maybe not so much pirate, because pirates are associated with ugly. He just looked more and more like Jack Sparrow. When I finished it, it was a pity to pack it and send it to the client. I hope the kids will like this doll.
